ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Primer (firearm)

Okay kiddo, so imagine you're trying to color with markers. But sometimes the paper is too shiny or the marker doesn't work very well on some parts of the paper. That's where primer comes in for guns.

To shoot a bullet out of a gun, you need to ignite gunpowder. And to ignite gunpowder, you need something that creates a spark. That's where primer comes in. It's a tiny little button, about the size of a pinhead, that contains a special chemical mixture. When the gun is loaded and ready to fire, the primer is hit by a firing pin and ignites.

This creates a small explosion that ignites the gunpowder in the bullet casing. The gunpowder creates a lot of pressure and pushes the bullet out of the gun barrel at a high speed. So, just like how you need a marker to work properly on the paper, the primer is needed to create a spark to ignite the gunpowder to shoot the bullet out of the gun.
