ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Private law

Private law is all the laws that deal with the relationship between individuals or companies. It's like the opposite of public law, which deals with relationships between the government, its citizens, and other countries. Private law helps people resolve disputes, decide how to divide money and property, and figure out what rights people have when it comes to things like buying and selling goods and services, making contracts, and suing each other if there is a problem.
