ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Racing Rules of Sailing

Ok, so when a bunch of boats get together to race, like in a competition, they need some rules to make sure it's fair and everyone has a good time.

One important rule is called the "right of way" rule. This means that when two boats are going towards each other, the boat that has the wind coming from its right side gets to keep going in its same direction, and the other boat has to turn away to avoid crashing into it.

Another rule is called "overtaking," which means that if one boat is getting close to another boat from behind, it has to give the other boat enough space to keep going without getting blocked or slowed down.

There are also rules about how close boats can get to each other without crashing, and how they have to start and finish the race.

It can all sound pretty complicated, but the idea is just to make sure that everyone has a fair chance to win, and that it's safe and fun for everyone involved.
