ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Repressive desublimation

Repressive desublimation is when people are encouraged to express themselves in a way that seems like it's freeing, but is actually limiting in the long run. Imagine you and your friends are playing a game where everyone can only use one color crayon to draw. At first, it seems fun because everyone is drawing with the same color and creating a similar outcome. But after a while, you might start to feel bored or frustrated because you can't use different colors to make something unique.

This is similar to repressive desublimation because it's like being given the illusion of freedom, but actually being limited in your expression. In a larger sense, repressive desublimation can refer to when society or a group encourages people to express themselves in a specific way, that on the surface seems liberating or freeing, but is actually limiting and doesn't allow for true creativity or individuality.
