Route of administration means the way we put medicine or treatment into our body. Just like how our body needs different types of foods to nourish it, sometimes it also needs different ways to put medicine inside.
There are different ways we can take medicine:
1. Oral: This is when we swallow a pill or a liquid medicine. It goes through our digestive system and gets absorbed into our body.
2. Injection: This is when we use a needle to put medicine directly into our body – either under our skin, into a muscle, or into a vein. This way, the medicine can quickly get into our bloodstream.
3. Inhalation: This is when we breathe in medicine through our nose or mouth. Think of it like smelling something – the medicine enters our body through our lungs.
4. Topical: This is when we apply medicine directly onto our skin. This way, it can be absorbed through our skin and get into our body.
Different medicines have different ways of getting into our body and some ways are better than others. So doctors and pharmacists decide which way is the best one to use for each individual medicine. It’s important to follow the instructions on how to use the medicine to make sure it works the way it’s supposed to.
