ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Routing

Routing is like giving directions to someone who needs to go somewhere. Like when you ask mommy or daddy to show you the way to your friend’s house. You need to follow certain roads and paths to get there. Similarly, when computers want to send a message or data to each other, they need to follow paths too. These paths are called routes.

The routes are created by special devices called routers. They are like traffic cops who control the flow of information on the internet. Routers connect different networks (like putting together a puzzle) and help the information get to its destination. For example, if you want to visit a website, your computer sends a request to the router on your home network. The router then sends it to the next router, and so on until it reaches its destination—the website’s server.

When the data arrives at its destination, it is like arriving at your friend’s house. The website gives your computer the information you were looking for, and your computer displays the website on your screen.

So, routing is a way for computers to find and communicate with each other. It’s like giving directions to help people or information get where they need to go.
