A rubric (academic) is a tool used by teachers to help them grade a student's work. It lays out the different criteria that a teacher will use to judge how good a student's work is, and their score is based on how well they meet each criterion. Rubrics usually have different levels, with each level having a description of what the student needs to do in order to get that score. For example, for a 5th grade writing assignment, a rubric might have 4 levels: Levels 1, 2 and 3 might describe different writing skills such as grammar, spelling, structure and organization, and Level 4 might describe what an 'excellent' paper looks like. This way, it makes it easier for a teacher to judge how well the student has done on the assignment.
