ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sanism

Sanism is a type of discrimination against people who have mental health conditions, just like racism is discrimination based on race or sexism is discrimination based on gender. It happens when people who do not have mental health conditions treat people who do as if they are inferior or not as important.

Think about how sometimes you might not treat someone kindly because they are different from you or maybe they don't look the same as you. This is kind of what happens with sanism, but instead of judging someone based on how they look, people judge them based on their mental health condition.

This can include things like assuming that someone with a mental health condition is dangerous or crazy, or treating them unfairly at work or school because of their condition. It can make people feel embarrassed or ashamed about their condition, even though they shouldn't be.

Sanism can be really hurtful and unfair to people with mental health conditions. Just like it's important to treat everyone with respect and kindness, it's important to treat people with mental health conditions the same way too.
