ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scandinavian flick

Ok kiddo, have you ever seen cars driving really fast and doing cool turns in movies or on TV? Well, one of the cool turns that they do is called a Scandinavian flick.

When drivers are going really fast and they want to turn their car, sometimes they use the Scandinavian flick. It's kind of like a trick that helps them turn their car really fast in a cool way.

Here’s how it works: The driver turns his steering wheel in the opposite direction of the turn he wants to make. So, if he wants to make a right turn, he turns his steering wheel to the left. This makes the car start to slide sideways a little bit.

Then, when the car is about at a 45-degree angle with the road, the driver quickly turns the steering wheel the other way - in this case, to the right. This makes the car's back end swing out even more to the left, and the car kind of whips around and heads in the direction of the turn.

It might sound a little bit scary, but it’s actually a really fun way to turn your car quickly and safely. And that's why race car drivers and other car enthusiasts like to use the Scandinavian flick!
