Shanghaiing

Shanghaiing was when people would secretly kidnap other people and force them to work on a ship without their permission. Imagine if someone took you away from your family and friends and put you on a boat without giving you a choice. That's what shanghaiing is. This used to happen a lot in olden times, especially in big port cities like Shanghai (that's how it got its name!). The people who were shanghaied were usually sailors or adventurers who were looking for work, but they were tricked or knocked out and then taken to the ship. It was a really bad thing to do, and thankfully it doesn't happen anymore.
