ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Short-term memory loss

Short-term memory is like a chalkboard in your brain where you write down things you need to remember immediately, like a phone number or a person's name. But sometimes, when you turn away from the chalkboard, the words disappear too quickly and you forget what you just wrote. That is what short-term memory loss is like. Your brain forgets things that you just learned or experienced because they did not have enough time to be transferred to your long-term memory, where they can stay for a longer time. It's like putting a key in a drawer but then immediately forgetting where you put it. This can happen because of different factors like stress, lack of sleep, or brain injuries or disorders. When it happens, you may struggle to remember what you just did or said, but don't worry, your brain will eventually start working better and allow you to remember things that matter to you.
