ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Societal attitudes toward homosexuality

Hi there! So imagine that liking certain things, like ice cream flavors, is perfectly normal and okay. However, some people might not like the same ice cream flavors as you, but that doesn't mean they're not just as valid. Similarly, liking boys if you're a boy, or girls if you're a girl, is also normal and okay. However, some people might not like the same gender as you, but that doesn't mean they're not just as valid.

Unfortunately, some people don't understand or accept that it's okay to like someone of the same gender. They might think it's weird or wrong. This is called homophobia. It can be hurtful to people who identify as LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and more), because they might feel like they're not accepted for who they are.

However, over time, more and more people are starting to realize that it's okay to like whoever you want to like. Many countries have made it legal for same-sex couples to get married and many people have become more accepting of LGBTQ+ people. This is called progress, and it means that we're moving towards a more inclusive and accepting world.

So, in summary, some people might not understand or accept that it's okay to like someone of the same gender, but things are getting better over time and people are becoming more accepting.
