ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Solicitor–client privilege

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a secret that you only tell your best friend. You trust your friend to keep the secret and not tell anyone else, right?

Well, adults also have secrets and they talk to their lawyers about them. When a person talks to their lawyer, it's a secret between them. This is called solicitor-client privilege.

It means that the lawyer can't tell anyone else what the person said, even if it's something really important or bad. The only time a lawyer would break this secret is if the person gives permission, or if the lawyer has to by law, like if someone's safety is at risk.

So, a person can feel safe and trust their lawyer to keep their secrets, just like you trust your best friend. But remember, it's important to only share secrets with people you trust!
