ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

State capture

State capture is like a game of pretend where one person gets to be the most powerful and is able to control everything. Normally, when we play a game of pretend, we all have fair and equal chances to be the leader. But in state capture, one person or group has more money, influence, or connections than anyone else, which means they can control the government and make decisions that will benefit them, even if these decisions are not good for everyone else.

It's like when we play with toys, and one person has all the good toys, they get to decide who plays with what and when. When someone has state capture, they can decide who gets the money, how the rules should be written, and who gets to be the leader. This is not fair, and it can hurt many people.

State capture happens when a powerful person or group uses their wealth, connections, or other resources to influence the government, so they can manipulate laws and policies to their advantage. It's like if someone bribes people in power to make decisions that help them stay rich and powerful, rather than what's best for everyone else. This can lead to corruption, unfairness, and harm for many people.

It's important to prevent state capture and to have a fair and just government where everyone has an equal say and can benefit equally from laws, policies and the economy. Just like in a fair game of pretend, we all should have an equal chance to be the leader and have our say in the way things are done.
