Stranded asset

A stranded asset is a type of investment that is no longer useful or valuable. For example, when governments or companies make large investments in something like a coal plant or an oil pipeline, they expect that the investment will pay off for many years. However, if the world changes and people don't use those types of energy sources anymore, the investments become stranded and can no longer make money.
