Subglacial volcano

Okay kiddo, imagine that there's a big mountain covered in ice, just like a cake with frosting. Now imagine that under that mountain, there's a volcano. The volcano makes really hot melted rock called magma that wants to come up to the surface. But because the mountain is covered in ice, the magma can't get through to the top. So it's stuck down there, and the pressure builds and builds until the volcano explodes!

When the volcano explodes, it shoots hot ash, gas, and rocks into the air just like when you blow bubbles in your drink. But because the volcano is under ice, the explosion can also create a lot of meltwater quickly. This meltwater can rush down the mountain and cause flooding. So subglacial volcanoes are very special and can cause both explosions and floods at the same time!
