Sudden infant death syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a tragedy that can happen to babies who are younger than 1 year old. It usually happens when a baby is asleep. For some unknown reason, the baby does not wake up and can suddenly die. Doctors and researchers don't know why this happens, but there are some things parents can do to help keep their baby safe. Babies should be put to sleep on their back, have a firm sleep surface, and sleep in the same room as their parents (but not in their bed). Taking these steps can help to reduce the chance of a baby having SIDS.
