ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Superfamily (linguistics)

Okay, imagine you have a really big family, like your mom, dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Now, imagine that there are many other families that are also really big and have lots of members, just like yours.

In linguistics, we can think of languages in a similar way. Some languages are related to each other and have a lot of things in common, like words that sound similar or rules for how to make sentences. We call these related languages a "family" of languages.

But sometimes, we notice that there are several families of languages that seem to have some things in common. Maybe they have some similar words or grammar rules. We call this group of language families a "superfamily" because it's like a really big family of languages. It's kind of like how your big family might have some similarities with other big families you know.

Overall, a superfamily of languages is just a really big group of related languages that share some characteristics with each other.
