ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Swoon hypothesis

Okay kiddo, so imagine you really like someone. You think about them all the time, you start to feel nervous and your heart beats faster when you see them. That feeling is what we call a swoon. The swoon hypothesis is a theory about why we swoon.

So, there are some things called neurotransmitters in our brain. They send messages between our brain cells to make our body do things. One of those neurotransmitters is called dopamine, and it makes us feel really good. When we like someone, our brain releases dopamine, and that makes us feel happy and excited.

But there's another neurotransmitter called serotonin. This one helps regulate our mood and behaviors. Sometimes when we like someone, our brain releases a lot of dopamine and not enough serotonin. This can make us feel really out of control, like we're not thinking clearly.

The swoon hypothesis says that when we swoon, it's because our brain is releasing a lot of dopamine and not enough serotonin. It's like our brain is trying to make us fall in love, but it's doing it in a way that's not sustainable. Eventually, our brain will balance everything out and our swooning will calm down.

So, to sum it up, the swoon hypothesis is a theory that explains why we feel so strongly about someone we like. Our brain releases a lot of dopamine, which makes us feel good, but sometimes it doesn't release enough serotonin, which can make us feel a little crazy.
