ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Syntactic category

A syntactic category is like a label or box for words that have similar jobs in sentences. Like how we sort our toys into different boxes based on what they are, words are sorted into categories based on what they do in sentences. Some words, like "boy" or "dog", are called nouns because they name something or somebody. Other words like "run" or "jump" are called verbs because they show actions or movements. Adjectives, like "red" or "happy", describe nouns by telling you more about them. There are other categories like adverbs, prepositions, pronouns, and conjunctions that have their own jobs in sentences. So, these categories help us understand the different roles that words play in sentences, just as toy boxes help us organize our toys by categories.
