ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Telephone fraud

Hello, little one! You know how we use the telephone to talk to friends and family who are far away? Well, unfortunately, sometimes bad people use the phone to try and steal money or information from nice people like us, and that's called telephone fraud.

Let me explain it to you with an example. Imagine you get a phone call from someone who says they're calling from your bank and that there's a problem with your account. They might ask you to give them your account number, Social Security number, or other personal information. They might also ask you to transfer money or make a payment to fix the problem. But here's the thing: they're not really from your bank! They're just pretending to be, so they can trick you into giving them your money and information.

That's called fraud because it's a lie that someone tells to get something from you that they don't deserve. It's like if someone told you they were a magical unicorn who could grant you wishes, but then they asked you to give them your favorite toy in exchange. And just like with the unicorn, you shouldn't believe everything that people tell you on the phone. You should always be careful and ask questions, especially if someone is asking you for your personal information or money.

So, if you ever get a phone call like that, what should you do? Well, the best thing is to hang up and call your actual bank or the company they claimed to be from. That way, you can check if there really is a problem or not. And if there is, you can fix it safely and securely. But if there isn't, you'll know that the person on the phone was trying to trick you into giving them your money or information. And that's not something nice people like us should ever do!
