ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Temperance movement

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of the word "temperance"? It means having self-control and not doing things that are bad for you.

Well, a long time ago, some people in America didn't like when people drank too much alcohol. They thought it made people do bad things, like get into fights or hurt themselves. These people wanted everyone to have more self-control when it came to drinking alcohol.

So they started a big group called the Temperance Movement. They made speeches, printed posters and newspapers, and even started protests to try to make people stop drinking so much. They wanted to change the laws so that alcohol was harder to buy and there were more rules about where and when you could drink it.

Some of these people thought that drinking any alcohol was bad, while others just wanted people to drink less. Some people even started making their own alcohol-free drinks like lemonade and root beer.

Even though not everyone agreed with the Temperance Movement, they were able to make a difference. They helped start laws that outlawed selling alcohol in certain areas, like near schools or churches. Eventually, they were able to get a big law passed that made it illegal to sell or make alcohol anywhere in America. But that didn't work out so well, and the law was eventually changed back so people could drink again.

So that, my little friend, is the story of the Temperance Movement. They wanted people to have better self-control when it came to alcohol, and they made a lot of changes to the laws and culture of America to try to make that happen.
