Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, there were some people who loved to sail their big boats across oceans to explore new lands. One day, some of these people, called Portuguese, decided to go on a big adventure to see what they could find.
As they sailed across the ocean, they came across some islands in the Indian Ocean that had been previously found by other sailors. The Portuguese sailors thought it would be fun to keep going and see what else they could find.
After sailing for a very long time, the Portuguese sailors finally reached a new land they had never seen before. The land was very different from the places they had been before – the trees were different, the animals were different, and the people spoke a language they didn't understand.
The Portuguese sailors decided to explore this new land and see what they could learn. They named the land Terra Australis, which means "Southern Land" in Latin.
However, not everyone agrees that the Portuguese actually discovered Australia. Some people believe that the Dutch sailors actually discovered it first, or that the Indigenous Australians had already been living there for thousands of years before the sailors arrived.
So, while some people think the Portuguese discovered Australia, others think it's more complicated than that. The important thing is that we keep learning about history and discovering new things about our world!
