ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

Okay kiddo, have you ever noticed that sometimes time seems to go by really quickly? Like when you're having fun playing with your friends and suddenly it's time to go home? Well, we say "time flies like an arrow" because just like an arrow that goes really fast, time can sometimes feel like it's going by really quickly.

But then there are these bugs called fruit flies. They like to hang around fruit because that's where they get their food. And when they're buzzing around, it can be really hard to catch them because they're so fast, almost like they're flying like a banana!

So when grown-ups say "time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana" they're making a funny comparison between how time can feel like it's going by quickly, and how fast fruit flies can move. It's a silly phrase, but it's a fun way to talk about the way we experience time and bugs!
