ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Topology glossary

Topology is a way of describing the layout of a network. A network can be made up of any kind of device that is connected, such as computers or phones. The topology defines how these devices are connected and how data moves between them.

In topology there are some special terms. A 'bus' is a straight line of devices connected together. A 'ring' is a shape like a circle, where devices are connected together and data from one device wraps around the circle back to the beginning. A 'star' is like a sun, where each device is connected to one central point. A 'mesh' is a complicated design with many different devices connected together.

Topology helps networks to work better--by making them faster, more secure, and more efficient. It's important for engineers to be aware of topology so they can make sure their networks are working as they should.
