Trap (plumbing)

Ok kiddo, imagine a pipeline system that helps carry water and other liquids in your house or apartment. There's one big pipe that carries all the dirty stuff from your toilets, shower, sink and bathtub. This big pipe is called the main drain.

Now, sometimes there's something big and heavy, like a toy or some food, that accidentally falls into the drain in the sink or shower. This can get stuck in the main drain and cause a smelly and yucky problem.

So, to keep this from happening, smart people invented something called a trap! This is a little curved piece of pipe that catches all the dirty stuff that might try to go down the drain. The trap is usually found under your sink or your shower or bathtub.

It works like this: the curve traps all the heavy stuff and creates a little pool of water that stays in the trap. The water helps block any stinky smells from coming up and keeps all the dirt down in the trap where it belongs instead of getting stuck in the main drain.

So, if you ever accidentally drop something down the drain, don't worry! The trap will catch it and keep your plumbing system safe and smelling nice.
