ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Waste-to-energy

Waste-to-energy is the process of taking garbage, which is what we throw away after we use something up, and turning it into something useful like energy. So instead of just throwing away all of our trash, we can heat our homes, power lights, and even create electricity from it!

First, big machines break up the garbage into smaller pieces. Then, it gets put into a chamber where it's burned using very hot temperatures. This creates heat which can be turned into steam by boiling water with it. This steam is then used to spin a turbine which creates electricity, just like how we spin a wheel to make a toy car move!

But burning trash can also create pollution, so special filters called "scrubbers" are used to clean the air before it's released into the environment. This way, we can use our garbage to create energy while also keeping the air clean for us to breathe.

Overall, waste-to-energy is like magic - turning garbage into something useful for us to use!
