ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Refuse-derived fuel

Refuse-derived fuel is basically garbage that has been turned into energy. You see, garbage is not really useless. It can be used to make electricity which can be used to power homes, buildings and other things.

The process of making refuse-derived fuel starts by collecting all the garbage in one place. The garbage is then sorted so that the things that can't be made into fuel, like plastic and glass, can be taken out. What's left is shredded into small pieces.

The shredded garbage is then put into a big tank where it gets heated up until it turns into a gas. This gas is then burned to create electricity.

How cool is that? Garbage which we think is useless can be made into useful energy to power things that are important to us.
