ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Weight function

A weight function helps us figure out how important different things are when we're trying to calculate something. Think of it like a recipe that tells us how much of each ingredient to add to make the perfect dish.

Let's say we're trying to find the average score of students in a class, but we know some assignments were worth more points than others. Without a weight function, we'd treat each assignment the same and just add up all the scores and divide by the number of assignments. But with a weight function, we can give more importance to the assignments that were worth more points.

For example, if one assignment was worth double the points of another assignment, we would give it double the weight. This means that when we add up all the scores, the score from the assignment with double weight will count twice as much as the other assignment.

In simple terms, a weight function is like giving more importance to some things than others when we're trying to calculate something.
