ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Whole grain

Whole grain is a type of food that is made from the entire grain of a plant, like wheat or oats. This means that everything in the grain, including the outer layer (called the bran), the middle layer (called the endosperm), and the inner layer (called the germ), is used to make the food.

This is important because each part of the grain has different nutrients that are good for your body. The bran has fiber, which helps your digestion, and other vitamins and minerals. The endosperm has carbohydrates, which give you energy, and some more vitamins and minerals. The germ has healthy fats, protein, and yet more vitamins and minerals.

So when you eat whole grain foods like bread or cereal, you are getting all of these good things from the grain. It's like eating a whole apple instead of just drinking apple juice - you get more nutrients and fiber when you eat the whole thing!

Some foods are not made from whole grains - instead, they are made only from the endosperm, like white bread or white rice. These foods don't have as many nutrients or fiber as whole grain foods.

So if you want to be healthy and make sure you're getting all the good things you need from your food, try to eat more whole grain foods!
