Acidosis is when there's too much acid in your body. Your body is like a big, complicated machine, and it needs to work just right, with everything in balance.
Imagine if you were making lemonade, and you added too much lemon juice. What would happen? The lemonade would be too sour and too acidic. That's kind of what happens with acidosis – there's too much acid in your body, and that's not good.
Your body makes acid all the time when it breaks down food, but normally your kidneys and your lungs work together to get rid of the acid so your body stays in balance. If your kidneys or your lungs can't get rid of enough acid, then you might get acidosis.
There are different types of acidosis, but they all mean there's too much acid in your body. Sometimes it happens when you breathe too shallow or too slow, like when you're sick or have asthma. Sometimes it can happen if you have diabetes and your blood sugar is too high. That's when your body makes something called ketones, which can make you more acidic.
Acidosis can make you feel tired, sick, shaky, or confused. But doctors know how to treat it, usually by giving you medicine or fluids to help balance the acid in your body. So if you ever feel like something's not right in your body, tell your parents or a doctor so they can help you feel better!
