ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Amateur rocketry

Amateur rocketry is when regular people who are really interested in science and space exploration, make their own rockets! Just like astronauts, but on a much smaller scale. They can do this as a hobby or for experiments.

To create a rocket, people use special materials like lightweight metals, plastics, and fiberglass to build the body of the rocket. They also add fins to help guide the rocket and a nose cone to make it more aerodynamic.

Once the rocket is built, people add a special engine filled with fuel to make it go as high as possible. These engines are like mini versions of what NASA uses in big rockets.

Before launching, people need to make sure the area they are launching from is safe and that all the systems on the rocket are working. They also need to make sure they have permission to launch from the authorities to keep everyone around safe.

Launch time! They ignite the engine, and the rocket takes off into the sky. People track it using special equipment to see how high it goes and how fast it travels. Sometimes they even make the rocket come back to them using small parachutes or other devices to make sure they can reuse them later on.

It's important to note that amateur rocketry can be dangerous without proper training and precautions. It's always important to follow safety guidelines and get help from experienced rocket builders or engineers.
