ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Arithmetic progression

Imagine you have a bunch of marbles in a row, and you want to count them one by one. If you start at the first marble and count up by the same amount each time, like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...you are using something called an arithmetic progression.

An arithmetic progression is just a fancy way of saying that you are adding or subtracting the same number from one term to the next. For example, in our marble example, we were adding 1 each time.

Let's say you had a bunch of numbers like 2, 4, 6, 8, 10...these are also in an arithmetic progression because you are adding 2 each time.

The cool thing about arithmetic progressions is that you can figure out patterns and relationships between the terms. You can also find out what term you will get to if you keep adding the same number each time.

So, remember the next time you're counting a bunch of things and adding the same amount each time, you're using an arithmetic progression!
