Aromatase excess syndrome

So, you know how some people are born as girls and some people are born as boys, right? Well, sometimes there are some girls who have a special condition called aromatase excess syndrome (AES) which makes their bodies act kind of like they are boys even though they are girls.

Now, let's talk a little bit about hormones which are like little messengers in our bodies that help our body parts do their jobs correctly. One of the hormones is called testosterone and it's usually found in higher levels in boys, but both girls and boys have a little bit of it. However, when someone with AES has too much of another hormone called aromatase, their bodies use it to make even more estrogen hormone which is usually higher in girls. This is a problem because too much estrogen can make their bodies act more like girls, but they have too much testosterone which makes their bodies act more like boys.

This can cause problems like not getting a period, feeling more like a boy inside their head or body, and even growing hair in places where girls usually don't grow hair. Sometimes, doctors can give medicines or other treatments to help balance out their hormones and make them feel better. It's important for people with AES to talk to their doctors and get the right treatments so that they can feel more comfortable in their own bodies.
