ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Baptism of Jesus

When Jesus was a baby, he was born just like everyone else. But when he grew up, he started to do things that were different from other people. He was kind to everyone he met, he helped people who were sick, and he talked about God all the time.

One day, Jesus went to a river where a man named John was baptizing people. Baptism means to wash someone with water as a symbol of being clean and starting a new life. John thought that Jesus should baptize him instead, but Jesus said no and asked John to baptize him instead.

So John baptized Jesus in the river. When Jesus came up out of the water, something amazing happened. A dove, which is a kind of bird, came down from the sky and landed on Jesus. And then a voice from heaven said, "This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."

This was a very special moment, because it meant that God was showing that Jesus was his son, and that he had a special plan for him. From that day on, Jesus started to do things that showed he was different from everyone else, and many people came to believe in him as the son of God.

So, in summary, the baptism of Jesus was a special event where he was washed with water as a symbol of being clean and starting a new life. It was a moment when God showed that Jesus was his son and had a special plan for him. It was an important moment in Jesus' life, and it showed people that he was different from everyone else.
