ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cadmium-free quantum dot

Quantum dots are like tiny, magical crystals that can emit light in different colors. Cadmium is a metal that can be used to make quantum dots, but it is bad for the environment and can be harmful if it gets into our bodies.

So, scientists have figured out a way to make quantum dots without using cadmium. This is called a cadmium-free quantum dot. They use other materials that are safer for the environment and for us.

Think of it like making cookies. If we don't want to use chocolate chips because they have sugar and might not be good for our health, we can use raisins instead. The raisins still taste good and work just as well in the recipe, but they are a healthier option.

In the same way, scientists are using other materials to make quantum dots that are just as good as the ones made with cadmium, but are safer and better for the environment.
