Catastrophism

Catastrophism is the scientific idea that big changes in the Earth's environment and features can happen quickly, over a short period of time, due to sudden, powerful events. This means that sometimes things that used to look a certain way look different after one of these powerful events. For example, a volcano or a flood could completely change a landscape or an environment in a very short period of time.
