Cenotaph

A cenotaph is like a pretend grave. Imagine you have a toy car that you really love, but it breaks so badly that you can't fix it. It's like the toy car is gone forever. You might feel sad that you can't play with it anymore. Sometimes adults feel this way too about people they loved who have died.

When a very important person dies, people might build a special monument to remember them. This monument is called a cenotaph. It looks like a grave, but it's actually empty. It's like having a special place to remember the person even though their body is somewhere else.

People put flowers or wreaths on cenotaphs to show that they are still thinking about the important person who is no longer with them. It's a way of showing respect and love even though they can't be together anymore.
