ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chilling effect (term)

Okay kiddo, so have you ever felt scared to say something because you thought someone might be mean to you or punish you for it? That feeling is called "chilling effect."

Basically, chilling effect means when something happens that makes people too scared to speak up or express their opinions. This might be because they're afraid of being bullied, punished, or getting in trouble.

Sometimes this happens because people feel like there will be consequences if they speak up - like if they criticize their boss, they might lose their job. Or if they post something online, someone might say something mean to them or even send them threats.

This can be a real problem because if people are too scared to speak up, then important ideas and opinions might never be shared. That's why we want to make sure that everyone feels safe and encouraged to speak their minds - even if they don't always agree with everyone else.
