Counter-Enlightenment was an idea that countered the beliefs of the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was a movement in Europe in the 1700s which focused on philosophy, science, and rational thinking and argued that people should be free and have equal rights. Counter-Enlightenment argued that enlightenment ideas were too extreme and led to disorder and instability in society. Instead, they argued that society should be ruled by tradition and religious belief, where change was slow and controlled. They argued that people should have certain natural rights to be respected, but that these should be limited in order for people to be obedient to their rulers.
