ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Couples therapy

Couples therapy is like going to school, but instead of learning math or reading, you learn how to be a better partner with your friend or spouse. You know how sometimes your parents teach you and your sibling how to share toys and play together nicely? Well, couples therapy is about learning how to share our feelings and communicate with our partner in a nice way. Just like in school, you have a teacher, in couples therapy, you have a therapist who helps you and your partner understand each other better. You might talk about things that make you happy and things that make you sad or angry. You might play games or do activities together that help you practice good listening and talking skills. It's like practicing being a good friend, but with your partner instead. And just like in school, you might get homework to practice these skills outside of therapy. The goal of couples therapy is to help your relationship grow and become stronger, just like how you get better at reading the more you practice. And even if things aren't perfect all the time, you'll learn how to work through tough times together and be there for each other.
