ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Cubic yard

Imagine you have a big box that is three feet long, three feet wide, and three feet tall. This box is called a cubic yard because it is made up of one yard (or three feet) in each direction. It's like having one big pile of things that can fit into this box.

To make it easier to visualize, think about a swimming pool. If you were to fill the pool with water up to a height of three feet, the amount of water you would need to fill it up completely would be about one cubic yard.

This measurement is commonly used in construction, landscaping, and other fields where large volumes of materials need to be moved or stored. For example, if you are ordering soil or gravel for your yard, you might order it by the cubic yard. This helps the supplier know how much material to bring, and helps you know how much you need to pay for.

So, in simple terms, a cubic yard is a big, three-dimensional box that measures one yard (or three feet) in each direction. It's used to measure the volume of large quantities of materials like soil or gravel.
