ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Deep sea

Hey kiddo, let's talk about the deep sea! Imagine you are swimming in a really big pool, but it's so deep that you can't see the bottom. Well, the deep sea is like that, but instead of a pool, it's the huge body of water that covers most of the Earth - the ocean!

Now, remember when you stick your hand under the water and the further it goes, the darker it gets? That's because the sun's light can't reach too far down in the water. The same thing happens in the deep sea, but even more extreme. There's no sunlight at all, so it's pitch black down there. That means that the creatures that live in the deep sea have to find other ways to see, like making their own light!

But it's not just the darkness that makes the deep sea different. It's really cold down there - often around freezing temperatures! And since it's so deep, the pressure from the weight of all the water above is really heavy too. Imagine a big elephant piled on top of you - that's a bit like what it's like in the deep sea.

Despite all these challenges, there are still lots of fascinating creatures that live in the deep sea. Some are really big, like giant squids, while others are really tiny, like some types of plankton. But they all have one thing in common - they have adapted to the extreme conditions and found ways to survive in a really different part of our world.
