ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Digital image

Hey there! Have you ever taken a picture with a camera or a phone? The picture you took is called an image. A digital image is similar to it, but it is made up of tiny little dots, called pixels.

Let's say you drew a picture of a tree with four colors: brown, green, blue, and white. A digital image of this picture will be made up of millions and millions of tiny squares, each one filled with a specific color to make up the entire image.

These little squares, called pixels, are so small that our eyes can't see them as separate squares but instead, they blend together to create smooth and different hues of colors that form an image.

A digital image is stored on a computer or a phone as a file. When we want to see the picture, we open the file, and our computer or phone converts it into something we can look at on a screen, like a monitor or a phone screen.

Digital images can be edited using software tools. For instance, if you wanted to change the color of the tree from green to pink, you can use an editing tool to do that.

So, in a nutshell, a digital image is a picture made up of tiny squares called pixels, which we can see on a computer screen, and we can modify it using software tools.
