ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Domestic violence and pregnancy

Domestic violence is when someone hurts another person on purpose, usually someone that they are in a relationship with like a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife. Domestic violence can happen in different ways, like hitting, yelling, or even not letting someone leave the house.

When someone who is pregnant is in a domestic violence situation, it can be very dangerous for both the mom and the baby growing inside her. The mom can get hurt very badly in a way that could hurt or even kill the baby.

Also, domestic violence can cause stress for the mom, which could lead to problems during pregnancy like high blood pressure, early labor, or even having a baby that is born too small.

It is important that anyone who is pregnant and experiencing domestic violence gets help as soon as possible. They can call the police, talk to their doctor, or reach out to organizations that help people who are experiencing domestic violence. It is important to remember that it is never okay for someone to hurt another person, and there are people who want to help.
