Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) is when engineers take heat from underneath the Earth's surface to use for generating electricity. They first drill a hole deep into the Earth, and put plastic or metal tubes into the hole. Water is then pumped down the tube, and it heats up as it goes further down because of the warmth of the Earth’s rocks. The hot water is then pushed back up the tube, and as it comes to the surface, it turns turbines that generate electricity. The electricity from the hot water spinning the turbine is sent to people's homes and used to make light, heat, and other forms of energy!
