Fill (archaeology)

In archaeology, fill is like the special dirt or rocks that people put on top of things they buried underground, like garbage, broken objects, or even people's bodies. When archaeologists dig down into old sites, they find layers of different things, and sometimes those layers have fill in between them. This fill can tell archaeologists a lot about what the people who buried those things were like and why they did it. Sometimes the fill might be different colors or textures, which can show if it came from a different place, and sometimes it might have things mixed in with it, like charcoal from fires. By looking at the fill, archaeologists can get a better idea of how the people who lived there used the land and what kind of stuff they threw away or buried.
