In archaeology, a feature is something that was made or altered by humans a long time ago. It could be a hole in the ground where a post was planted to build a house, or a ditch dug to keep water away from a settlement. Features are important because they give archaeologists clues about how people used to live, work, and organize themselves. Just like how a picture can tell a story, features can tell us a story about the past, and archaeologists work hard to carefully study and understand them.
