ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flight duration

Flying in an airplane is like riding in a giant flying bus. Just like a bus trip, how long your trip will take depends on a few things.

First is how far you need to go - this is like how many stops the bus needs to make before getting to your destination. The farther you need to go, the longer the trip will be.

Next, airplanes can't fly as fast as superheroes like Superman or The Flash, so they have a maximum speed they can go. This is called the "cruising speed". If the airplane goes faster or slower than its cruising speed, it will use up more fuel and take longer to get to its destination.

Another thing that affects how long a flight takes is the wind. Just like how walking can be harder or easier depending on which way the wind is blowing, airplanes can be faster or slower depending on the wind. If the wind is blowing in the same direction as the airplane, the airplane can go faster and get to its destination more quickly. But if the wind is blowing in the opposite direction, the airplane has to work harder and will take longer to get there.

Finally, there can be delays or stops along the way, just like how a bus might have to stop and pick up more passengers or go through traffic. These can add extra time to the trip.

So, when figuring out how long a flight will take, we need to know how far the plane needs to go, how fast it can go, how the wind is blowing, and if there will be any stops or delays. All these things together make up the "flight duration" - or how long it will take to get from one place to another in an airplane.
