When people had to measure things a long time ago, like hundreds of years ago, they didn't use the same measurements that we use today. They had their own ways of figuring out how much something weighed or how long something was.
For example, one way they measured length was using a part of their body. They might use the length of their arm, or the distance between their fingertip and elbow, to measure something. They would use this measurement as a standard and compare it to other things they wanted to measure.
They also used things like seeds or grains to measure weight. These tiny things were very consistent in size, so people could count them and use them as a unit of weight. For example, they might say that a pound is equal to 7,000 grains.
Different places also had their own ways of measuring things. So if you went to a different town or country, they might measure things differently than what you were used to. This could be a problem if you were trying to buy or sell something and you didn't understand their measurements.
Nowadays, we use a system of weights and measures that is the same all over the world, so we don't have to worry about these problems. It's called the metric system and it uses things like meters, grams, and liters to measure length, weight, and volume.
